
Senior Development Engineer | Controls and BMS
Location: Amsterdam, NL | Team: Engineering | Travel: ~20%
At Moonwatt, we are developing the next generation of gigawatt-scale battery energy storage systems to support a clean, reliable, and renewable-powered grid. We are seeking a Controls and BMS Engineer to join our Energy Storage Systems (ESS) team and take a leading role in the design, modeling, and optimization of control algorithms that govern our battery systems. Your work will directly impact system performance, safety, and long-term reliability across utility-scale deployments.
⚙️ What You’ll Do
Design, implement, and optimize control and estimation algorithms for battery systems to improve energy efficiency, stability, and performance in real-world grid environments.
Develop and simulate detailed system models using Python, MATLAB/Simulink, or equivalent platforms to validate control strategies and predict dynamic system behavior.
Lead cell testing initiatives: define test protocols, manage testing campaigns, and analyze data to characterize cell behavior and fit representative models.
Conduct hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and system-level testing to validate algorithms under various operating conditions and industry standards.
Analyze telemetry from deployed systems to drive continuous improvement in control strategies and system diagnostics.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate control algorithms into Moonwatt’s BMS hardware and software stack.
Document algorithms, models, and validation results for internal knowledge sharing and regulatory compliance.
Stay up to date with industry standards and trends in control systems, battery modeling, and grid integration technologies.
✅ Must-Have Qualifications
Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related discipline.
5+ years of experience in control systems engineering, system modeling, and algorithm development within the battery or energy storage industry.
Proven experience with Battery Management Systems (BMS) for high-voltage systems, including algorithms for SOC, SOH, SOE, and power prediction.
Strong proficiency in Python, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar tools for control system simulation, modeling, and algorithm development.
Hands-on experience with cell testing, cell model fitting, and test data analysis.
Expertise in HIL testing, real-time simulation, and validation techniques.
Working knowledge of power electronics, battery energy storage systems, and grid-connected systems.
Excellent problem-solving and communication skills with the ability to thrive in cross-functional teams.
Passionate about renewable energy and driven to make a positive environmental impact.
Willingness and ability to travel up to 20%.
