Senior Development Engineer | Controls and BMS

Location: Amsterdam, NL | Team: Engineering | Travel: ~20%

At Moonwatt, we are developing the next generation of gigawatt-scale battery energy storage systems to support a clean, reliable, and renewable-powered grid. We are seeking a Controls and BMS Engineer to join our Energy Storage Systems (ESS) team and take a leading role in the design, modeling, and optimization of control algorithms that govern our battery systems. Your work will directly impact system performance, safety, and long-term reliability across utility-scale deployments.

⚙️ What You’ll Do

  • Design, implement, and optimize control and estimation algorithms for battery systems to improve energy efficiency, stability, and performance in real-world grid environments.

  • Develop and simulate detailed system models using Python, MATLAB/Simulink, or equivalent platforms to validate control strategies and predict dynamic system behavior.

  • Lead cell testing initiatives: define test protocols, manage testing campaigns, and analyze data to characterize cell behavior and fit representative models.

  • Conduct hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and system-level testing to validate algorithms under various operating conditions and industry standards.

  • Analyze telemetry from deployed systems to drive continuous improvement in control strategies and system diagnostics.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate control algorithms into Moonwatt’s BMS hardware and software stack.

  • Document algorithms, models, and validation results for internal knowledge sharing and regulatory compliance.

  • Stay up to date with industry standards and trends in control systems, battery modeling, and grid integration technologies.

✅ Must-Have Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • 5+ years of experience in control systems engineering, system modeling, and algorithm development within the battery or energy storage industry.

  • Proven experience with Battery Management Systems (BMS) for high-voltage systems, including algorithms for SOC, SOH, SOE, and power prediction.

  • Strong proficiency in Python, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar tools for control system simulation, modeling, and algorithm development.

  • Hands-on experience with cell testing, cell model fitting, and test data analysis.

  • Expertise in HIL testing, real-time simulation, and validation techniques.

  • Working knowledge of power electronics, battery energy storage systems, and grid-connected systems.

  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills with the ability to thrive in cross-functional teams.

  • Passionate about renewable energy and driven to make a positive environmental impact.

  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 20%.
