Lead Mechanical Engineer | Energy Storage Systems

Location: Amsterdam, NL | Team: Engineering | Travel: ~20%

Moonwatt is looking for a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Energy Storage Systems (ESS) team as we accelerate the deployment of cutting-edge sodium-ion battery technology. This role is central to the design and development of utility-scale energy storage systems, with a strong focus on battery module and pack design which is a critical and non-negotiable requirement for this position.

🔧 What You’ll Do

  • Own the mechanical design of Moonwatt’s high-voltage ESS, from concept to production, including prototyping, testing, and manufacturing support.

  • Lead the mechanical architecture and packaging of batteries, ensuring optimal thermal performance, structural integrity, and manufacturability.

  • Develop 3D CAD models (SolidWorks or equivalent), perform detailed FEA analyses (for seismic, shipping, and compliance), and simulate thermal management strategies.

  • Define and manage mechanical and thermal requirements at both the component and system levels.

  • Collaborate across disciplines (electrical, controls, logistics, and manufacturing), and interface with external partners, suppliers, and contract manufacturers.

  • Work in a fast-paced, hands-on environment that values rapid prototyping, iteration, and practical validation.

  • Support a culture of initiative, ownership, and teamwork where no task is too big or too small.

✅ Must-Have Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical design, with a proven track record in battery module and/or pack design (this is a core requirement).

  • Deep knowledge of mechanical and thermal engineering principles.

  • Expertise in commercial CAD and PLM tools; experience with FEA and thermal simulation techniques.

  • Experience designing and manufacturing medium to high-volume mechanical or electro-mechanical products.

  • Hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, and system validation.

  • Passion for clean energy, sustainability, and innovation.

  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 20%.

🌟 Preferred (but not required)

  • Experience with high-voltage battery pack development, power converters, or electrical enclosures.

  • Familiarity with battery modeling, performance testing, and lifecycle analysis.

If you’re an experienced mechanical engineer with a strong background in battery module and or pack design, and you’re excited to shape the future of energy storage, we’d love to hear from you.
